: MEXECRI developed this cultural heritage project in coordination with La Comunidad Indigena de Nuevo Parangaricutiro in Michoacan, Mexico under the authority of the Consejo Nacional de Arqueologia in Mexico. The project involves scientific investigation of the paintings, site excavation, cultural interpretation and training of local community members in the management of cultural resources.
The Committee for Research and Exploration of The National Geographic Society provided the principal funding for archaeological research and laboratory testing. The research is conducted in partnership with La Comunidad Indigena de Nuevo Parangaricutiro which has provided substantial in-kind support for the project. Additional funding was received from The Foundation for the Advancement of Mesoamerican Studies (FAMSI), The Foundation for the Study of Cultural Origins, Central Washington University ( Dr. Steven Hackenberger, Dr. Lisa Ely and Dr. Wendy Bohrson), The University of Texas at El Paso, The University of Edinburgh (Dr. Anthony Newton), and contributions from Dr. J. Benedict and Patricia Warren. Private donations are needed to continue the project.
